Can’t believe Adam has seen “Twilight” and is Team Edward…
In Jennifer’s Body (in theaters today), Adam Brody, our favorite geek hero from The O.C., tries evil on for size. He plays the lead singer of a devil-worshipping emo band that attempts to sacrifice Jennifer (Megan Fox) because they think she’s a virgin and it will bring them greater fame. (He doesn’t do his own vocals: “My singing voice is still going through puberty,” he says. “They gave me a singing lesson or two, and it’s not the worst thing in the world, but it’s not anything anyone would choose to hear.”) Unfortunately, since Jennifer’s not pure, a demon takes over her body and starts feeding on high school boys. Almost as dangerous as Megan Fox with a supernatural appetite? The EW Pop Culture Personality Test. Brody submitted to one and had a couple of friends over in case he needed backup…
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: The best concert you’ve ever seen? ADAM BRODY: My first. I saw Kris Kross in the front row. We were the same age. It’s also the best seats I’ve ever had at a concert to this day.
Did you wear your clothes backwards?
I didn’t, but I admired the fact that they did greatly?
The most embarrassing song on your iPod?
“Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head.” It was in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, I like that. But it doesn’t get the party started, that’s for sure.
Adam Brody says he had a blast playing the lead singer of a rock ‘n roll band who passes through a small town looking for a virgin to sacrifice in Jennifer’s Body, a horror comedy directed by Karyn Kusama and written by Diablo Cody. Brody joined the film’s two female stars, Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried, Cody, Kusama, and Johnny Simmons (he plays Seyfried’s boyfriend) at a special fan event in LA to kick off the release of the 20th Century Fox film. Before a public Q&A and a an autograph session, Brody chatted about his character and the appeal of Jennifer’s Body.
Adam Brody Interview
What prep did you do? Did you study bands or rock stars?
Adam Brody: “We tried for a little Brandon Flowers, maybe a little Morrissey for a second. Then there’s Maroon 5 and other good stuff.”
Was it the fact it was a darker film that appealed to you?
Adam Brody: “It wasn’t, actually. I mean, it’s nice that it was sort of a departure, but that’s kind of a happy accident. Really, I’m just looking for, I want to work with intelligent people and look for scripts that I think are intelligent and surprising.”
Q: We saw you shooting some of your scenes today as “the rock star” in the bar. Looks like fun. Where you channeling anybody?
Adam Brody: There’s a later performance where I don’t have a guitar and there is a bigger stage that I can walk around, so I liked to think of myself as Morrissey in that. In this one I don’t know as much… actually this one, I don’t have much room to move around. So no one specific… I’m just a singer.
Q: Can you tell me your character is, and what you play?
Brody: Sure. I play Nikolai and he is a singer in a band. He is a front man and he aspires to fame and fortune and he goes to great lengths to achieve it. But not through traditional channels, more like sacrificing a virgin. Like maybe ambiguously burning this entire bar down. It’s a longshot, but you have to try everything.
Q: What’s it like playing the bad guy?
Brody: It’s really fun, you know, partially because bad guys tend to be kind of powerful. So that’s kind of fun to be the leader and kind of be in control of the situation. My character, in most of the scenes, is kind of in control of the situation. It’s fun. That’s a different thing. Jason Reitman and Dan Dubiecki are producing this movie, and I was in Thank You For Smoking, so I know them from that. And they have become friends of mine.
Adam Brody is branching out, venturing far from “The O.C.” to portray a murderous musician in the horror satire “Jennifer’s Body.”The tale of teen angst and cannibalism, which was written by Oscar winner Diablo Cody (“Juno”) and directed by Karyn Kusama (“Girlfight”), is not the standard high school slasher film. While women are typically victims in the genre, this movie features a female killer who stalks boys. Megan Fox stars as Jennifer, who turns evil after an encounter with Brody’s character. The actor welcomed the opportunity to play a darker role after years of portraying an insecure comic-book fan on “The O.C.”
The 29-year-old looks forward to future roles as sociopaths, but next up is a Kevin Smith cop comedy, “A Couple of Dicks,” in which he plays a detective apprentice alongside Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan. We sat down with Brody in a hotel suite during a “Jennifer’s Body” press day at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Q. This movie is brutal, but it’s also funny, and horror comedy is a really good genre.
A. To me, “The Shining” is funny.
Q. “Silence of the Lambs,” laugh riot.
A. There are jokes in that. Anthony Hopkins is funny.
